36-Year-Old Widow Defeat Plateau Assembly Speaker To Become First Female Member-Elect

36-year-old Happiness Akawu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has defeated the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Yakubu Sanda (APC, Pengana Constituency) to become the first female Member-Elect of the assembly.

Happiness is the wife of the initial PDP candidate, the late Mathew Akawu, who died after the party’s primary and was replaced by his wife.

The INEC Returning Officer for the election, Professor Sati Chanle, who announced the results, said Akawu polled 9,926 votes to defeat Sanda who got 7,936 votes.

According to the results, Faisal Maitala of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) scored 6,721 votes to finish third.
