The All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly contemplating a significant shift in its zoning strategy for the National Working Committee (NWC) offices, potentially impacting the current National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje. Sources indicate that the party is considering appointing former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim as its new National Chairman, which could signal a strategic pivot ahead of the 2027 general elections.
An insider privy to the developments disclosed to the Sunday Telegraph that both Senator Anyim and Ganduje recently visited a prominent billionaire from the South East, aiming to secure his influential support. This billionaire is said to have close ties to the Presidency, making his endorsement crucial in the party’s strategic realignment.
The APC has faced internal discord over the zoning of its National Chairmanship. Initially zoned to North Central (Nasarawa) in 2022, it was later shifted to the North West (Kano State) in 2023, sparking protests from members in Nasarawa State and the broader North Central region. These members have repeatedly called for a return to the original zoning arrangement, even taking legal action against Ganduje.
The proposed rezoning aims to quell these internal disputes and formally integrate the South East into APC’s leadership structure. Plans for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in October and a non-elective National Convention in December have been stalled, delaying any leadership changes until 2025. “All activities related to leadership transitions within the party have been postponed,” the insider confirmed, reflecting the party’s cautious approach as it navigates its internal and external challenges.
