The Nigerian Senate has announced an emergency session for Wednesday, July 31, 2024, to address the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024. The session was called by Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, to discuss issues of national importance.
A notice was circulated to all 109 senators on Monday morning, requesting their attendance at the emergency plenary sitting. The session will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday.
This development comes after the National Assembly, comprising the Senate and House of Representatives, cut short its annual recess to tackle the pressing issues surrounding the protests. Lawmakers had initially planned to reconvene on September 17 but have returned to session to address the looming protests.
Prior to their recess, the lawmakers had made significant progress, including enacting the minimum wage law, approving a N6.2 trillion increase to the 2024 budget, and passing amendments to the 2023 Finance Act, among other notable legislative actions.
