In a viral video, Abuja residents repeatedly chanted “we are hungry” as Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike urged them not to join the August 1 protests against economic hardships and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
Wike pleaded with the crowd, saying:
– “I’m begging you all…”
– “Hunger has been since before now. Ours is to support the government to succeed.”
– “I know the pain you are passing through. It is your sacrifice for the country.”
– “Just be patient. Hope is coming back. This hunger will reduce very soon.”
– “I believe in Tinubu’s government.”
Despite Wike’s appeals, the crowd continued to chant “we are hungry,” highlighting the desperation and frustration among Nigerians due to the economic crisis.
Wike had earlier warned against protests in Abuja, stating that the FCT is unavailable for protests. However, his pleas may not be enough to dissuade citizens from demanding change.
