by

In a move aimed at addressing sexual harassment in the workplace, the Nigerian government has suspended the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa, pending an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

The suspension follows a formal complaint filed by a married employee of the ministry, Mrs. Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi, who accused Lamuwa of serial sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment, and intimidation. The complaint, signed by her lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), detailed instances of Lamuwa’s inappropriate behavior, including unwanted advances and comments.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, officially notified the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, about the allegations and attached a copy of the petition. The minister urged the Head of Service to investigate and take appropriate action.

Lamuwa’s suspension is seen as a positive step towards addressing sexual harassment in the workplace. If found guilty, he may face dismissal due to gross misconduct. The incident highlights the need for a safe and respectful work environment, and the importance of taking allegations of sexual harassment seriously.

The government’s prompt action in suspending Lamuwa demonstrates its commitment to addressing sexual harassment and ensuring a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees. The outcome of the investigation and any further actions taken will be closely watched, as this case sets a precedent for addressing sexual misconduct in government ministries and beyond.
