President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to provide a comprehensive report on the cost implications of the new minimum wage within two days. This move aims to expedite the negotiation process and ensure a swift resolution.
The President has also instructed all parties involved in the negotiation, including representatives of the federal government, organized private sectors, and sub-nationals, to work together to achieve a new minimum wage that is affordable, sustainable, and realistic for Nigerians.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the President is committed to accepting the resolutions of the tripartite committee on the new minimum wage. The goal is to reach a consensus within one week, ensuring a new wage that benefits all Nigerians.
This development follows an emergency meeting summoned by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, with labour leaders after the recent strike that crippled economic activities. The Federal Government has offered to pay a minimum wage higher than N60,000, paving the way for a successful negotiation.”
