Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) on Monday joined the nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), paralyzing court activities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
JUSUN members locked out judges, lawyers, staff, and litigants from accessing courts, including the FCT High Court, Federal High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court. The union’s chairman, Comrade Samuel Ikpatt, confirmed that they were in total compliance with the NLC’s directive to down tools.
According to Ikpatt, there are no court sittings, and no one is allowed inside the courts until further directive from the NLC. Similarly, Mohammed Danjuma-Yusuf, Treasurer of the JUSUN Chapter of the Court of Appeal, stated that the Court of Appeal is in total shutdown, with all 20 branches affected.
The NLC and TUC declared an indefinite strike beginning June 3 after negotiations with the government over the minimum wage of workers reached a deadlock. The strike has brought economic activities to a standstill, with judiciary workers joining other unions in demanding better working conditions and fair compensation.”
