A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a medical doctor and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., over the death of a client, Nneka Onwuzuligbo, who died in 2020 after a failed plastic surgery. The conviction was announced by Babatunde Irukera, a former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), on Friday.

Irukera, who personally prosecuted the case, tweeted: “Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise. This is how society should work and grow.”

Dr. Adepoju was convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC, including failure to appear before the agency and produce a certain document. The conviction is a significant milestone in the quest for accountability and justice for consumers of professional services.

The FCCPC, under Irukera’s leadership, had arraigned Dr. Adepoju before Justice Mohammed Liman, and the case has been a test of the agency’s resolve to protect consumers and hold professionals accountable for their actions.

The conviction is a victory for consumers and a warning to professionals who fail to adhere to ethical standards and best practices. It demonstrates that the wheel of justice may grind slowly, but with determination and competent prosecution, justice can be served.
