It is no secret that Manchester United had tried to sign Jadon Sancho last summer. The Red Devils were reportedly ready to shell out as much as €100 million for the English international. On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund wanted €120 million and ultimately, a move failed to transpire.
After a slow start this season, Sancho has managed to find his form once again. In 31 appearances in all competition, the 20-year-old has managed to score 12 goals and provide 16 assists, forming a brilliant partnership with Erling Haaland along the way.
But it looks like the Red Devils might be looking at other players as well when it comes to signing a right-winger. According to The Telegraph and as reported by Metro, they view Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves as a viable alternative to Sancho.
The Portuguese winger has made quite an impact this season, scoring 15 goals and providing 5 assists, as Sporting Lisbon sit at the top of the Primeira Liga with a 10-point lead.
The Red Devils have enjoyed a good history when it comes to signing players from Sporting Lisbon in the past. Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani had brilliant careers at Old Trafford and Bruno Fernandes appears to be heading the same way after a sensational start to life at the club. And they might try to repeat the trick with Goncalves as well.
The 22-year-old reportedly has a €60-million release clause in his contract and it will be interesting to see whether Manchester United are willing to meet that.
When it comes to experience, Sancho might be the better option. But Goncalves’ displays this season have shown that he has the potential to be a world class player in the future as well.
One thing is for sure though, the club need to sign a right-winger in the summer. Mason Greenwood has filled in there this season but you’d argue that he is more effective when playing more centrally
