Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has pledged continued support for National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW and other unions.
Governor Ortom, who is Patron of the union made the pledge yesterday at the Benue Peoples House Makurdi, when the National President of NURTW, Comrade Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him.
The Governor stated that he was willing to contribute his quota to the development of the union, stressing that he was always proud to identify with NURTW as a place of his humble beginning, noting that as Governor, he still relates well with his friends from the motor park.
He commended the leadership of the NURTW for the nationwide sensitization of members on COVID-19 safety protocols, even as he prayed God to grant leaders of the union the wisdom to take it to the desired destination.
National President of NURTW, Comrade Tajudeen Ibikunle, represented by the National Deputy Chairman, Comrade Isah Ore, said as persons directly involved in transportation of Nigerians, they needed sensitization to be abreast with dangers of the dreaded disease.
He stated that as part of efforts to support the fight against the spread of COVID-19, the national secretariat of the union had procured fumigation equipment and sanitizing solutions worth millions of naira for fumigation of motor parks, garages among others.
The NURTW President acknowledged the Governor’s labour friendly disposition which he said has created a conducive atmosphere for members to operate, describing the recognition given to the organised labour in Benue as worthy of emulation.
