_Cites Economic Hardship and Killing of Protesters_

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has announced the cancellation of this year’s International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations, citing solidarity with the #EndBadGovernance protesters who lost their lives and concern over the country’s severe economic hardship.

In a statement signed by its President, Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, on August 11, 2024, the NYCN expressed its profound concern over the economic crisis, marked by rising inflation, high unemployment rates, and growing discontent among the youth. The council believes it is necessary to prioritize addressing these pressing issues over celebratory events.

The NYCN has submitted a detailed position paper to the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim; and the National Assembly, containing recommendations to alleviate current hardships and strengthen the role of Nigerian youth in national security intelligence.

The council is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider and act upon key recommendations, including:

– Convening a National Youth Conference to facilitate dialogue between government officials and youth leaders
– Launching a national peer-to-peer program to reduce support for protests
– Implementing immediate economic relief measures, including subsidies on essential goods and job creation programs
– Investing in vocational training and educational programs aligned with industry needs
– Enhancing support for young farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs
– Improving access to affordable healthcare
– Subsidizing and improving public transportation
– Ensuring transparency and accountability in economic policy implementation
